From de northwest of france:
If you see my results, do you think i can have ancestors ashkénaze ? I have 5,11%
Most probably not. Up to 5% is the average score for non-Ashkenazis.

Hi there :) I'm pretty new to DNA testing and I have a question. I read that 4% or less Ashkenazi is considered normal for people of European decent and doesn't mean anything. Mine is coming up as 5.13% so does that mean nothing or is it accurate? Any insight would be very appreciated. Thank you
Hi crystaltalton,
Even if that test is considered outdated, the general "rule" is that people who score around 5% of less on Jtest don't have recent AJ ancestry (at least, not significant enough to warrant further investigation). However, it doesn't meant you can't crossckeck with other calculators/oracles on Eurogenes, and see of those give you any AJ result. Also, what company did you test with, and did it give you AJ percentages?

Based on prior post I'm unsure if my results show significant Ashkenazi ancestry. Any advice would be appreciated. Sorry, I'm new to genealogy. Thanks in advance.

My Jtest is as follows:

Population
SOUTH_BALTIC 10.15 Pct
EAST_EURO 10.76 Pct
NORTH-CENTRAL_EURO 26.52 Pct
ATLANTIC 25.94 Pct
WEST_MED 13.40 Pct
ASHKENAZI 9.10 Pct
EAST_MED 1.67 Pct
WEST_ASIAN 1.80 Pct
MIDDLE_EASTERN -
SOUTH_ASIAN -
EAST_AFRICAN -
EAST_ASIAN -
SIBERIAN -
WEST_AFRICAN 0.66 Pct

This GEDMATCH was based upon a transfer from 23andMe, which shows NO ashkenazi ancestry. My Heritage shows me as 10 percent Balkan and 4 pct Italian. I am ethnically (in the US terms), a Southerner, of Scots-Irish, French Huguenot and Spanish Creole (Louisiana) heritage. Our family is almost exclusively Southern, from the original Virginia Colony down to South Carolina and west into Louisiana. My mother's side is heavily French and with some Spanish. We have no Balkan or Italian heritage that I know of, tracing back hundreds of years. I do not know her entire maternal line, but I know it is K1c2, which is found (according to Doron Behar's studies) in N. African Jews (Iberia as well if I recall correctly) and Ireland/Scotland. K1 is found in many Ashkenazi but clearly precedes European ancestry (thus may have been the maternal line of Sephardic men in Iberia/N. Africa). I believe K1c (possibly K1c2) has been found in Syria, thousands of years ago.

9.10 Ashkenazi seems very high for someone who does not know exactly who was Jewish in the family, particularly the maternal line. If anyone has any ideas, I'd like to hear them. Thanks !

I don't know, I find it curious that you have AJ as a second pop in the first 2 results of the "mixed mode", but not with the other oracles. However the distance is not very close (>4) and your best fit anyway is the 4 populations approximation, which doesn't show any AJ. The designer of this calculator has pointed out a couple of times that it was very outdated and that he mostly designed it "for fun", so if you have no known/proven recent AJ ancestry, I wouldn't take these results seriously - especially since your 23andme report doesn't show any AJ, and that company is supposedly the one to go for for anyone wanting to discover AJ ancestry, even in tiny percentages.

Yes, I would tend to agree. I'm a Christian who is not seeking some personal revelation (as many people are), that I'm some secret Crypto-Jew, although I think it is highly possibly some Huguenots indeed were Jews who became Reformed Christians (in France), and Huguenots and Jews have shared experiences with Catholic persecution. My mtDNA in Genebase (K1c2) showed nothing but matches with Jews all over the world, from N. Africa to Hungary (this would be the strict maternal line). I had zero matches in their population groups with anyone other than Jews. I have never gotten the deep subclade done, but if my mother's maternal line was from Ireland, they were likely K1c2a. It is interesting, from an anthropological perspective, that K1c2 is basically Jewish, N. African, and then found in Ireland and Scotland....as if the British Hebrew folks were right all along !

I found the 10 percent Balkan finding on myHeritage to be the most strange. My family lines are all pretty much Scots-Irish (and probably a lot of them were of Norman descent judging from the surnames), French Huguenot and some Spanish. The Spaniards that went to Louisiana were pretty much all Catholic, although some Cryptos are possible. Did anyone from the Balkans even come remotely close to North America prior to the late 1800s? My lines all go back to the 1600-1700s. Anyhow, interesting either way.

Thank you for your input ! Are you in France? or just of French descent?
